Summer with Lia ~ French Connection Vol. 2

Summer with Lia ~ French Connection Vol. 2

The French Connection continues!

A few weeks back Lia arrived in Amsterdam, right in the middle of the Moonshine Zine production! So it wasn’t until now that she was able to write an introduction blog post. Lia will be staying here for two months and holding down the fort as I take a two week break! I’m happy that you can get to know her better.

a little bit about me

Hey everyone ! My name is Lia and I am 21 years old. I’m a student in a graphic design school in Marseille, in the south of France. Next year I will be starting my third and last year before graduating with a bachelor degree, and I’m currently staying two months in RisoPop for my internship.

I grew up in the countryside of France as an only child, so I felt it was now my moment to bloom and get out of my comfort zone!

So I came to this internship in Amsterdam, and until now it has been  a bundle of learning, exploring and experimenting... A whole lot of new.

I always knew I loved making illustrations and graphic design in general, but it wasn’t always obvious.

In 2018, after four years of learning the techniques of designing and making jewels in a jewerly highschool, I got my A degree and could finally pursue what was really motivating me : graphic design.

I chose to go to the big wild and hot city that is Marseille, with its culture, its various museums and culture and of course, the calanques!

In my studies, I’ve had great oppurtunities to make animations, illustrations, editorial projects but also visual arts and performances, interior design etc. This large spectrum of art projects helped me knowing my strenghs and weaknesses.

For each project I’ve done, I’ve always tried something new. If you look at my portfolio, everything is different and every creation has its own identity. I change, get inspired by new and different people and I enjoy experimenting! Here is some of my work, mostly illustrations, editorial and animations. Take a look at my insta @li.a.n2

Work in progress

The project : RisoPop Colour Cards !

Risography is a new technique for me. I’ve only been here two weeks at the studio but I’ve already started experiencing so much. Not only have I learned about risography, the printer, the ink drums, the colours...

I enjoy how Aafke and all the other artists who use riso at the studio manage the color combinations and how they can mix them so well together. So when deciding on my project, we came up with a fun way to introduce people to riso colours.

For the months of July and August, I will be working on a set of eight cute cards and a poster, packaged inside a paper match box. Each card will be illustrating one of RisoPop’s colours, showing the range that is possible through printing.

The first idea was to create cards with two or more colour combinations, maybe even a card game! But when drafting the plan, it because obvious that time was running short for the size of the project ( amount of cards two or more colour prints + two sides + cutting everything and making a box… )

So we had to go back to the basics: the main goal was to create a more interactive object (instead of the classic ‘poster’) that would help to not only see the possibilities of each colour, but to also use them while planning a riso print. Since they are all separate cards, you can put them next to each other, to see which colours work best together, and in the future make your own riso combinations!

For now I have on each card  an illustration of a riso related object, the hex code as well as the colour gradient. This will be a cute and fun object that’s different and can be used for various purposes.

I will be updating you through instagram so you can see how the project is progressing!
