French Connection - Welcome Eliza

French Connection - Welcome Eliza

Starting halfway in April I have a new intern joining the Riso Pop experience: Eliza! She will be supporting me for the coming 3 month as well as bringing a new community zine project (more on that soon!). So let’s welcome her and get to know her a bit better:

Who is Eliza?

Hello, my name is Eliza ! I’m a French and Hungarian student completing my second year of Bachelor’s in Graphic Design at the school Duperré in Paris. Throughout my studies I have discovered different techniques going from lino printing to 3D animation. Nevertheless, I have a colorful artistic universe which led me to risography !

A little bit more about me :)

My mom is hungarian, my father is french and we’re three siblings each 15 months apart (19/18/17 - i’m the oldest). We have lived in different countries such as Hungary, Armenia, Georgia for about three years each, since then (2015) we stayed in France. As such we had a glimpse of different cultures and this increased my curiosity and passion for adventure.

Since then I have had the chance to travel to Japan alone with an organization living with host families. Japanese culture always interested me and seeing it for real was a dream come true. I could see nature, temples, subcultures (manga/anime), and understand how their society works (the pressure on highschoolers was shocking !!). Still, the best part for me was the food, the different noodle dishes (soba, ramen, udon), sushi of course, mochi and matcha, it was great. I have always been a big fan but since my trip I was unstoppable and since I love to cook specialties I tried some of them at home like for example dorayaki (red bean paste pancake sandwich).

(The below series of illustrations are inspired by traditional Japanese Yokai)

Otherwise, I love watching movies at the cinema or at home while crocheting. Mostly indie movies that are artistic, aesthetic and fantastic or dark thriller movies with a lot of plot twists like for example Parasite of Kim Bong Joon-ho (I really recommend it if you haven’t yet seen it). Some of the film directors I like are David Lynch, Gaspar Noé, Pedro Almodovar, Kim Bong Joon-ho. I also love music. I listen to a wide range of music going from folk, rock, punk, electro and last but not least funk !

Back to risography…

Although I have little experience as of yet I’m inspired and attracted to its colorful and textured effect. I can’t wait to experiment and use the full potential of Riso printing and try different color combinations, textures and raster effects to make unique prints !

Throughout my 3 months stay in Amsterdam as an intern at the Riso Pop studio, I will be working with Aafke who will show me how to manage a Riso studio, workshops and deepen my knowledge of this uncommon technique.

I would also love to see what the Riso Pop community is capable of creating. That is why in collaboration with Aafke I will be leading a community fanzine project that will be launched soon. I hope many of you will join in !!

The Big Project Idea

MOONSHINE is a collaborative fanzine where imagination is key.

We invite you to join us in a world where everything is possible!

Since the beginning of time, the moon shine has always been connected from mystical to even absurd stories. And this has been the starting point for this project.

Think about classical vampires, monsters, japanese yokai as well as many other traditional folklore stories. Also more contemporary stories such as American horror, harry potter and even Peter Pan.

Each fanzine will have a theme that you can interpret in many different ways : Flying Monsters, Sleeping at the bottom of the sea and Ghosts in the toilet. Absurd, funny, fantastical and creepy are all words that we want to inspire you!

I hope you are feeling excited! More information about this project will be available when I arrive at the studio.
