As the end of October draws near, in Mexico, my beloved homeland, preparations for the grand celebration of the Day of the Dead are on their way! It's a joyous occasion where families come together to honor the memory of their departed loved ones and to revel in the beauty of life. Rest assured, it's a celebration of love and remembrance!
What are Nichos?
A nicho is a small shadow box that features a scene, images and items that are special to the person who creates it (photos of a loved one, a piece of jewelry, a mini toy, etc.). Many ofrendas (Day of the Dead altars) include nichos as a way of paying tribute to loved ones who have passed away, but they can also feature daily life and tend to inlclude humour.
Join us this Friday evening to delve into making your own niche! This workshop offers an introduction to Risograph printing and paper construction.
What to expect?
During this evening you will get an introduction to the Die de los Muertos festivity and the symbolisms behind the ofrendas and Nichos.
You will be able to choose from different templates to start designing your personal nicho.
You will also learn how the risogrpah printer works and will be creating a design to print with two colours.
You will contstruct at least one nicho and you can also do extra decorations (think glitter!)
You will go home with a collection of everyone’s designs as well as your own.
